HEADSHOT TIPS FOR MEN

WHAT TO WEAR?

There are three main styles for dressing men: casual, business casual, and business attire/formal. I won’t make you pick just one, I’m happy to try a few options as time allows until you get the look you’re going for. The most important thing is that the clothing is clean, wrinkle free and fits well.

Solid colors are always a safe bet, whether it’s a polo, collar shirt, or jacket. Try to avoid stripes or small patterns that look busy, and obviously, no logos unless they correlate directly with your business. The point of your headshot is you, not a busy pattern or someone else's logo.

Make sure your clothes are well fitted, try your clothing on within a few days before the session to make sure it still fits you correctly. Several times over the years clients have shown up to a shoot with a baggy shirt that makes it look like they're wearing their Dad’s clothes. Even worse, is when a client wears something that used to fit, but is now too tight.  Try things on beforehand and maybe even get a second opinion about the fit.

Cautionary advice about wearing a white shirt… We want your subject’s face to be the most striking portion of the portrait, not the shirt. Sometimes a white shirt grabs all the focus,  and even worse, light illuminating under your chin can showcase a double chin or neck wrinkles. White shirts aren’t always a bad thing, but how they can affect a headshot should be considered.

Don’t wear an undershirt when wearing a light collared shirt, a white undershirt outline is often seen through the shirt when shot with bright strobe lights.

Lint and pet hair can be removed with Photoshop, but as the guy doing the time intensive Photoshop work I’d rather not spend hours cleaning up your clothing when a lint roller before the shoot will do the trick.

HAIR styling

I recommend that you style your hair for the photo shoot similarly to how you typically have it; remember we are trying to represent the genuine you. Combing your hair a bit more meticulously than normal or using a bit more gel isn’t a bad idea, as long as you still look like you. If you do get a haircut before the session I recommend doing it a week ahead so there aren't any abrupt cut lines that can show on a fresh haircut. On the other hand, if  you typically shave your head make sure it’s done recently and looks clean.

As far as facial hair goes, the same guidance applies, you want to look like your typical self, so don’t be clean shaven when you typically have scruff. If you have a beard make sure it’s well trimmed, and clean up any unwanted nose or ear hair.

Make sure you wash your face before the photo shoot to ensure you don’t appear sweaty or shiny. Also, do not use sunscreen the day of your session since it can make your face look oily and shiny as well.
